Me

New Door

I once told a friend that I view life as a tower of doors. You start at the bottom and you slowly open every door on the first level and when you’re thoroughly done exploring the rooms, you ascend to the next level and on and on you go. And I do not think there is a ceiling on this tower. The levels are endless, and hence the opportunities are endless. I believe this metaphor extends into the afterlife as well.

Purpose of this long-winded metaphor? Well as anyone can tell – my wordpress blog has been a little dusty. I realized I have not posted anything since my travels to Kenya! I know what happened. Life consumed me. I remember a point when I told myself, ‘Monica, you just don’t have time to journal and blog! There are always 100 things to do on your to-do list.’ And I stopped writing. Which I regret that decision because I have dearly missed what my fingers are supposed to do. Writing is my easiest method of communication with the world, my friends, my family, and myself. I am ashamed that I stopped.

But I write this new blog to say that I am re-starting my blog as I open several new doors on a new level of my life. My blogs will be in a more different style. I used to write travel blogs, but these are going to be my random musings. They won’t be terribly descriptive about my life, but I hope they capture my at-the-moment emotions, surroundings, and thoughts. I also hope they will provide pieces of wisdom.

I am excited. As my brother stated in his graduation speech, β€œI believe that each and every one of us have been given a grand opportunity, and that is the opportunity to have control of our future and improve our lives, regardless of what it is we choose to do.”

My friends and I are starting many new chapters in life whether we are taking a year off to explore and prepare for our professional careers, starting law school, starting graduate school, teaching in a different state, or starting medical school. This next part of our journey is incredibly exciting. It is the most amazing thing to be able to picture the image of our futures.

For those of you who do not know, I will be starting my first year of medical school. I am also obtaining my Masters of Public Health at the same time in a joint MD/MPH program. My other future career goals involve continual work with Straw to Bread in Kenya (as a training physician and researcher), taking in all I can in order to one day start a nonprofit in an area in Cambodia/other third world region, and developing my writing career. But most importantly are my social/emotional goals: to keep strong the wonderful friendships I have made at Baylor, to keep my heart open to new opportunities, to increase my strength of compassion, to improve myself, to continue to explore and keep my faith strong, and to become a better daughter/sister/cousin/friend/student.

I look forward to reading many of my friends’ stories as well.

Wishes and blessings,
M
